THE Magazine For Mobile DJs
The DJ's Diet
If there's one thing in life we can't live without, it's food, and I'm sure we've all got our own particular likes and dislikes. But the one thing I love to hear stories and discussions on is the eating habits of us DJs, mainly because our choice of "meals" are often so random and spur of the moment.

From what I've experienced it seems that in our industry we all just eat as and when we can and with the busy Crimbo season now behind us, I thought we'd have a comical look at the styles of food and drink we all tuck into when out on the road. Obviously these insights are "tongue in cheek", but see if any of the following relate to you ...

The Pack Up DJ
This is exactly what it says on the tin! A pre-prepared doggy bag or lunch box rammed with homemade nibbles and whatever you can raid from the cupboards before leaving. Usual favourites include homemade sandwiches, a mountain of choccy biscuits and chocolate bars, crisps, and maybe a slice of cake. Very rarely does fruit appear in this pre-prepared meal, as most items need to be consumed quickly with little mess or sloppiness. (There's no way a Muller fruit corner can be included!) The Pack Up can also sometimes be prepared by a wife, partner, or family member … as food always tastes better when it's made by someone else!

The Buffet DJ
This is the DJ who specifically waits to be fed by their client's over specified buffet spread. The numbers attending a party are generally known by the client, but the spreads are always enough to feed double that number! The DJ will lurk like a snake, waiting for the right time to pounce and load the cheap pound-shop paper plates high with as much of Nanna's buffet as possible. The plate literally bends with the intense weight of the mountain on top of it.

Week in, week out, the Buffet DJ is presented with the same paper plates, napkins and food selection at every party. Key favourites include sausage rolls, sausages on sticks, mini pizzas, sandwiches, vol-au-vents, chicken legs, and of course the classic watery quiche! If the buffet hasn't been home cooked, then a member of the family has raided Iceland's freezers earlier in the week.

On the odd occasion a DJ can be left out to starve throughout the evening, which of course means alternative action must be taken.

The "Crisps and Sugary Soft Drinks" DJ
This is the DJ who only lives off crisps and sugared soft drinks from the bar. When isolated at a gig this is sometimes the only option. If you completely forget about food before the gig, and no buffet is served, this is the only get out. Of course if a vending machine can be located (ala Sports Centre style), then this of course can also be raided and you can load up with chocolate treats.

Copious amounts of Coke, Energy Drinks, Lemonade or other sugary drinks are consumed throughout the evening. With the reaction from the crowd on a good night, the drinks' high sugar content and caffeine can assist in the "buzz". Plus all the saturated fat from the Salt & Vinegar "Big Bag" crisps or Pork Scratchings please the DJ's ever hungry stomach for the duration of the gig. Often the "Takeaway DJ" follows this type of evening.
