Lack of DMX lighting effects is not generally a problem for most mobile DJs; many of the DJ effects currently on the market now support DMX and the majority of us have plenty of compatible lighting at our disposal. However, the problem for a lot of DJs is actually linking and controlling all of these effects to create a synchronised light show. The concept of DMX continues to baffle many mobile DJs, for a number of reasons, not least the complexity of many of the controllers currently on the market. To help combat this problem, Transcension have launched a new compact and straightforward controller called the Light and Easy.
The Light and Easy has been developed to provide an easy to use, flexible and affordable controller for the many four channel LED lighting effects that are currently available from a host of different manufacturers. The unit is designed to control eight separate lighting fixtures and allows users to programme a total of thirty-two separate colour presets and eight custom chase patterns. Each of the eight fixtures has a dedicated selection button on the left hand side of the controller, with an LED indicator to show if the fixture is currently selected. Each of the pre-set fixture buttons is assigned to four particular control channels, with Fixture 1 operating channels 1-4 and Fixture 2 operating channels 5-8 etc. If eight fixtures doesn't sound like enough, don't forget that more than one lighting unit can be addressed to the same fixture button. As an example, eight LED par cans could be positioned down one side of a room as up-lighters and another eight on the opposite side. Alternate cans on one side could be given a DMX start address of 1 (Fixture 1), while the other four cans could be assigned to start address 5 (Fixture 2). In a similar way, alternate cans on the other side could be addressed to 9 (Fixture 3), with the other four set to a start address of 13 (Fixture 4). This would allow the Light and Easy to provide effective control of all 16 par cans using only four of its preset fixtures.
Although specifically designed for four-channel LED lighting units, the Light and Easy can actually be used to control any four-channel DMX fixtures. In fact it can also be used to operate units that require more than four control channels by using multiples of the pre-assigned fixture selection buttons for each light.
When it comes to getting started, the Light and Easy lives up to its name, the process is truly easy. All you have to do is hook up your lights to the controller using XLR-XLR leads, set the DMX address for each light, select them using the 'Fixture Selection' buttons and then control them using the channel faders - one for each of the four DMX channels for each fixture. In the case of many of the LED wash lights (LED Par cans etc.) currently available, the first three channels provide dimming control of the three LED colours: red, green and blue, while the final channel acts as a master dimmer and strobe control.
