I first started my career as a DJ back in 1999, at the age of just 15. After accumulating a small collection of CDs, I borrowed £300 from my Dad and combined this money with my savings to buy my first DJ setup. I'd scrapped the savings together from car washing, busking with my trumpet in Cardiff City Centre, a paper round and pretty much any other work I could do to get money for my kit. I bought my first rig second-hand, it was quite basic but was good enough for me to learn the basics and start to take on gigs.
My inspiration to become a DJ came from attending a friend's house party when I was in my early teens. After watching the DJ for a while I turned to my friend and said "We could do better than that!" I went on to prove that I could, although my friend wasn't as interested. In the early days I mostly worked alone, although there were certain occasions for bigger gigs when I would get help from a number of different friends. My parents drove me around until I was old enough to get my driving license, but I always paid my own way giving them petrol money each time they took my to a gig. When my parents were not available, I got a taxi. I had to ask for a BIG vehicle and a driver willing to give me a hand with the gear or otherwise wait around while I loaded it into the venue myself! Either way, in the early days I made very little money and the business just paid for accumulating better equipment. While I wasn't making any profit, I was building up a good reputation which later proved to be invaluable.
My very first paying gig was a kid's party for one of my younger sister's school friends who had seen me play music at my sister's party with a few lights, two CD players and a really old mixer. I remember spending a lot of time preparing beforehand, making flyers and so forth. I only charged a laughable £25, but then my equipment was basic and my experience was nil. The party must have been well received as it resulted in me getting two further bookings within days and a couple of years later I ended up DJing for the girl's mother's wedding!
