Equinox Quadrille
It was a little over a year ago that I set about reviewing the first four units in the Equinox LED range, the Radon, Krypton, Cobalt and Carbon, which have since become mainstays of many mobile lighting rigs. Earlier this year three more single lens effects were added to the collective, together with the Bounce, an LED take on the classic twin-moonflower effect. Thus far all of the units in the range have followed a similar format, with the only variation being the number, and arrangement, of the LEDs positioned behind the single lens (two lenses in the case of the Bounce).

The Quadrille features a fan of four lenses, each of which project a pattern created by an arrangement of 30 LEDs. While this lens layout has been used before on other DJ lighting effects, it is the arrangement of the LEDs behind each lens that set the Quadrille apart. The LEDs are arranged into tight 'circle' patterns of five LEDs, one each of red, green, blue, white and amber. For each lens five of these LED clusters are arranged in a bigger 'circle' pattern with a final set of five LEDs positioned at its centre. Because of the layout of the LEDs a distinctive spinning/shaking effect is created when the LEDs chase.

The spread of the Quadrille's effect is very wide in one dimension, but narrow in the other, which generates an impressive mid-air effect. This also allows the light output to be directed at a particular area, for example on to the dance-floor or high on a wall. This can be useful to create the right atmosphere for dancers while being careful not to shine lights in the eyes of other party guests who are sat talking.
