Kam KWM1256
We have featured a couple of Kam radio mic reviews in Pro Mobile over the last few years; however they have all been at the bottom end of the spectrum. In fact that is often the territory that Kam are associated with, cheap and cheerful products that do the job and don't break the bank. While the brand is still covering that market, some of their new products are actually venturing into higher quality territory and the KWM1256 wireless mic is a good example.

The KWM1256 is a 256 channel UHF system offering true diversity. This means that the receiver unit has two separate antennas, each tuned to the same frequency. As the wireless microphone is moved around, electronic circuitry within the receiver can instantly select the antenna which is receiving the strongest signal. This helps to avoid 'dropouts' and ensure crystal clear reception.

As has become common, the KWM-1256 system comes packed in a plastic 'power tool' type case. Although not built for the rigors of the road this does offer some protection and is useful for storage and keeping the various components together. Inside the case, each item has its own space set into foam inserts, including the receiver, various cables and the mic itself.

The compact receiver unit occupies half of a 1U 19" rack space, although it is supplied with one short and one long rack ear, allowing a single receiver to be rack mounted. Connections for the detachable antennas are provided both on the front and rear panels, allowing the user to select the most suitable position for a given application. Audio output is provided via a choice of balanced XLR or unbalanced ¼" jack plug, while power is provided by the supplied 9V adaptor. A blue backlit display on the front panel shows various information, including the current frequency and which antenna is active.

The actual mic has a good feel - solid, yet not too heavy. A small LCD display shows the current frequency and two tiny recessed buttons allow it to be changed. In terms of sound reproduction, I was very impressed with the KWM-1256's performance; vocals are clear and crisp, making it an ideal mic for DJ use.
