THE Magazine For Mobile DJs
Is Free Advertising Worth It?
We all like to feel that we are getting a good deal, and there is no better deal than receiving something for nothing. However, as we all know, when something is offered for free there is usually a catch. There are a number of 'free' methods of advertising that mobile DJ businesses can use for marketing their services, but are they 'worth it'?

Banners / Signs at Gigs

A popular method of 'free' advertising employed by many DJs is to include a banner or sign as a part of the front of their rig, displaying in big bold letters the DJ's business name and contact details. While not totally without cost, as the banner or sign has to be made, there is no recurring cost as with other popular forms of advertising such as newspaper or directory listings. The theory in this case is obviously to ensure that every guest at a gig knows who the great DJ is, so that they will book them the next time they need entertainment for a party. A potential problem here is that the client may not take kindly to advertising being erected in their tastefully decorated function room, particularly at formal occasions such as wedding receptions. Remember the client may not actually voice their opinion, but that doesn't mean that they approve.

My personal take on this is that displaying a company name on the front of a rig is unnecessary. If a guest at a gig has a function coming up (and you do a good job), they will approach you for a card. If a guest organises a function further down the line, they are very unlikely to remember what was written on a sign at the front of your rig. However if you were good enough to stick in their mind they will ask the organiser for your contact details. Either way, the sign board is unnecessary and may not be what your client wants to see as the centre piece of their elegant evening. After all, at a wedding have you ever seen a huge banner erected at the front of the church announcing "Flowers By Rita"!
