Numark iCDX
Numark announced the launch of a range of innovative new products in 2006, which are now hitting our shops. The iCDX made its UK debut at PLASA last September, generating plenty of interest from bedroom, club and mobile jocks alike.

At first glance the iCDX may just look like a single DJ CD player, albeit it with a rather funky design. However, with a closer inspection it becomes clear that this machine offers more than the average table top player. Yes, it plays CDs; but it also sports a connection to allow playback of digital files from a USB hard drive or iPod. Not only that, but it has a separate USB HID connection to allow control over any computer DJ software which supports this format.

The slot loading disc draw is compatible with regular audio CDs and also mp3 CDs and DVDs. It is a simple task to switch between playing tracks from a disc to playing music stored on an external USB mass storage device. In the same way it is also easy to then switch to controlling mp3 playback on a computer program.

I tried out the iCDX alongside Numark's new DJ software package CUE - see the separate review on page 54. Setting up the iCDX to control the software was a piece of cake and the iCDX provided a perfect hands-on interface for the software, including playing, pausing, cueing, scratching, looping and pitch control.

The iCDX is finished in black and silver, with a gloss black top panel and matt black sides that are embossed with the Numark logo. At the centre of the player is a touch sensitive jog/scratch wheel, which is illuminated by a ring of blue LEDs. These flash to the beat while music is playing, providing a visual indication of the tempo. When playback is stopped, a single LED is lit to show the current position to aid cueing / scratching. This may sound a little cheesy, but Numark have actually pulled it off in a credible way. At the back of the unit is a slot to allow an iPod docking station to be attached, which will be sold as an accessory. This is another clever design feature emphasising this player's multi-format concept.
