Bose PAS
I first found out about the Bose PAS system on the internet forums when New Zealand based DJ Richard Mills from Rendezvous was singing its praises. I'd read all the info I could on it, but it was only recently at the NADJ AGM that I saw one ‘in the flesh’.

It's a strange looking setup, two three and a half foot poles clip together on a circular base to form one 7ft line array speaker with two very small bass bins. I thought there was no way this was going to do the job. Despite my doubts, I listened to the demo with an open mind, but came away disappointed, the Bose rep couldn't have it on loud, the room was small and there was too much ambient noise to make any judgement on its performance.

On the way back from the AGM I decided to go to a local retailer for a "proper" demo, high volume in a massive room, with a flat signal source (i.e. CD).

I've tried lots of different speakers and PA equipment since I started DJing in 1986 and the PAS does not sound like anything I've ever heard before. If you like chest thumping, trouser flapping bass with piercing highs then turn the page as the PAS is not for you. The PAS reintroduces you to a level of detail that will have you turning up the midrange! Yes I know, midrange, but when you can hear every note, every guitar string being plucked and every breath taken by the singer, you'll listen differently to all your favourite tracks. Bass is not forgotten though, the system comes with two small bass bins (B1) that deliver everything below 180 Hz and rather than swamp you with bass they reinforce the bottom end without dominating. It's like listening with headphones on, the clarity is that good.
