THE Magazine For Mobile DJs
Top 10 DJ Hates
Having recently written a letter to Pro Mobile and received a goodie bag for it, and as this month is the quietest in all my time in the business, I thought that today would be a good time to start my journalistic career!

I suppose the first thing I need to do is establish my credibility in the mobile discotheque world, so a few details about me might be appropriate at the beginning. April 1972 was when I joined Roger Squire Discotheques as a DJ / compere. My ambition was not to operate a mobile disco, but to work in radio, and some well meaning - and somewhat misguided - person had suggested that "most radio presenters start this way". As I had no knowledge, equipment or bookings, joining an established company seemed a good idea and Roger Squire, who later owned retail disco shops and is to this day a good friend, ran one of the most successful and largest mobile disco operations in London.

Having bluffed my way to a job and with Roger's help, I learned an awful lot about entertainment in a short time and I eventually bought my own system and started running my own business. Again this had not been my idea, but Roger had decided to open a shop selling discotheque equipment and trying to keep 14 mobiles working efficiently and start a new retail company was never going to work. Consequently, all of the Roger Squire DJs were given the option of buying the gear that they were using and taking their future bookings as a starting point. So at that time, I went solo...

Now if I keep writing about myself, two things will happen. Firstly, if you haven't stopped reading this already, you soon will, and secondly, my head will not fit through any of our doors here at home. So, having given a very brief history of my career up to the present day, which work-wise now consists of local radio presenting, acting and yes, still running a mobile, I will get to the crux of my first article for Pro Mobile, which is the Top Ten hates for DJs.
