THE Magazine For Mobile DJs
Two members of the DJ industry use pedal power to help a good cause
Later this year, Mike Stead and Andy Podmore are cycling all the way from London to Paris to raise money for Action Medical research. The pair will be joining around 400 other cyclists to undertake the challenging ride that starts in London on Wednesday 22nd July and ends in Paris on Saturday 25th.

Mike will be well known to many readers as the owner of the Phase One DJ store in Darlington, the company behind the djanddiscostuff.com website. However, Mike doesn’t just sell DJ gear, he also uses it! He has been DJing regularly since the age of 16 in pubs and clubs around Darlington, and has held a residency in a big town centre venue for over 15 years.

Mike was challenged to take on the London to Paris ride by Andy Podmore, who is Area Sales Manager for popular mobile DJ gear distributor Prolight Concepts. Andy is an experienced cyclist and has already completed the London to Paris ride back in 2007. When Andy completed his first mammoth ride he was sponsored by the many DJ equipment retailers across the country that he supports on behalf of Prolight. For this year’s ride he is hoping to once again receive the support of the DJ industry and therefore feels he needs to push himself even further. Instead of simply repeating the initial challenge, Andy is going to effectively double his route by cycling from ‘Prolight to Paris’. He will start his journey four days before Mike and the rest of the riders and cycle from Prolight’s HQ near Blackburn to the start of the ‘official’ start of his challenge at Blackheath in London.

While Mike and Andy both love cycling, the main reason that they are taking on the London to Paris challenge is to raise money for a great cause, Action Medical research. The charity helps to improve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of childhood disease and disability by funding the highest quality research most likely to bring benefits to babies, children and their families. The London to Paris Bike Ride is to raise money for the charity’s ‘Touching Tiny Lives’ appeal. Around 50,000 babies are born too early in the UK each year, yet little is known about what causes premature birth or how to prevent it. Action Medical projects aim to improve understanding of the conditions that put babies at risk of an early birth and enable doctors to find new treatments.

As an added incentive, Mike has organised a prize draw to win an incredible package of DJ equipment that has generously been donated by companies within the industry. Anyone who donates £2.50 or more in support of Mike will be entered into the draw to win the following fantastic collection of DJ gear worth in excess of £1800:
