X Factor Hits 18 Million Albums
The X Factor has just launched its 10th season and Music Week has revealed the extent of its huge history of sales.

Since the first series in 2004, X Factor contestants have sold more records in the UK than any corporate record group, based on the Official Charts Company data. Domestically 30 million singles have been sold and 18 million albums.

Leona Lewis, whose three Syco albums have sold 3.9million copies in the UK, remains at the top of the successful contestants table, followed closely by Olly Murs with singles and JLS on albums. Murs has sold 3.9 million UK singles sales and his current album ‘Right Place Right Time’ was up to 814, 686 last weekend, having returned to the Top 20. JLS, who announced their split recently, have sold 2.7 million albums across their Epic and RCA releases.

X Factor acts hold a 2.2% share of the artist LP market since the first winner Steve Brookstein. All X Factor winners have shifted more than a million singles in the UK, with One Direction’s first two albums selling 1.7 million copies so far, with their third due in the Autumn. If overseas sales were included, this number would be considerably higher due to the success of artists such as Leona Lewis, Cher Lloyd, Little Mix, Olly Murs (pictured below) and more notably, One Direction.

The new series of X Factor sees the return of judge Sharon Osbourne after a 6 year absence, she will be joined by Gary Barlow, Nicole Sherzinger and Louis Walsh.
