André Rieu Makes History
Dutch violinist, composer and conductor, André Rieu has achieved the highest grossing weekend takings in UK box office history for its genre, according to CinemaLive.

André Rieu’s 2013 Maastricht Concert grossed over £450,000 according to Rentrak figures. The film was shown at 257 cinemas across the UK and Ireland with a further 77 sites in Europe participating in the satellite broadcast which was held in Rieu’s home town of Maastricht in the Netherlands.

Due to its success, the concert will now be shown in a further 400 cinemas across the world including Canda, US, Brasil, Mexico, Argentina, Columbia and France.

Peter Skillman, director and CEO of CinemaLive said: “This is a real achievement, not only for CinemaLive but for music-led event cinema as a whole. This proves that cinema is a viable revenue stream for artists, artist management and record companies. It’s no secret that the music industry is facing an uphill struggle as traditional modes of revenue all but disappear, but by embracing cinema, a new platform can be integrated into the artist’s overall offering”

He continued: “Our partnerships with André Rieu Productions and Decca Records, as well as our proactive exhibitors across the UK and Ireland, have contributed to the success of this release and I wish to thank my team here in London, led by our head of Distribution, Helen Jones, for their efforts in reaching this milestone"

André’s father, of the same name, was conductor of the Maastricht Symphony Orchestra. Following in his footsteps, André has been playing the violin since the age of five and is best known for creating the Waltz-playing Johann Strauss Orchestra.
