Viva Forever! Spice Girls Confirm Musical
The rumour mill has been on overload with speculation about the Spice Girls reuniting for a musical ever since their ‘Return Of The Spice Girls’ Tour in 2007/2008. Today (June 26th) the band confirmed that they are joining forces again for ‘Viva Forever’ a musical based on their songs.
To confirm their plans, the former band came together at the place it all began, the St Pancras Hotel in London where they filmed the music video for ‘Wannabe’, the single that catapulted them to fame 16 years ago today!
‘Viva Forever’ will be based around the Spice Girls' songs and written by comedienne Jennifer Saunders who infamously starred with the pop group on their comic relief single ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, Mel C and Mel B have also all been involved in creating the musical, which is due to open at the Piccadilly Theatre in London's West End on the 11th of December.
The band were asked to re-form for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert earlier this year but band member Mel C commented, “It was an honour to be asked, but not everyone is comfortable about doing it so we have to respect each other’s feelings about that”.
You only have to look at musicals like ‘We Will Rock You’, the show based on Queen songs, or ‘Mamma Mia’ based on Abba's back catalogue, to know that, when done right, musicals can be an entertaining and exciting way to keep the legacy of a great act going. Only time can tell if this will be true of 'Viva Forever'.
In the meantime, mobile DJs better dust off their old Spice Girls singles (don’t pretend you don’t have them!) as the musical could spark renewed demand for the girls' biggest hits!
