The BRIT Awards 2012
It’s that exciting time of year again, when our British artists are recognised for their originality, showmanship and talent. The BRIT Awards 2012 are upon us and what a previous year to be celebrating!
The 32nd BRIT Awards will be held at the O2 in London on Tuesday 21st February 2012 and will be hosted by British funny man James Corden. The 2012 awards will see winners presented with an exclusive trophy designed by leading British designer Sir Peter Blake who is responsible for some of the most iconic album sleeves of all time including the Band Aid single ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’. Last year the coveted trophy was created by Dame Vivienne Westwood, which no doubt is a hard act to follow.
The nominations comprise of the best and brightest of British talent from 2011. Last year saw the introduction of Adele’s incredible ‘21’, which is up for ‘Best Album’, and Adele herself is also up for ‘Best Female Solo Artist’. Over the past twelve months we’ve also been treated to new music from the likes of Jessie J, Ed Sheeran and Emile Sandé who are all up for the ‘Best Breakthrough Act’ gong.
Of course the Brits aren’t only about home grown talent; the category for ‘Best International Act’ includes somewhat obvious contenders such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga and new mother Beyoncé as well as unusual contenders like quirky songstress Bjork and Canadian singer/songwriter Feist!
Indie band Blur will pick up the award for ‘Outstanding Contribution To Music’. The group will be following in the footsteps of music legend Paul McCartney and their old Britpop rivals Oasis who have both previously received the honour. Blur will be performing to close the awards show, while other confirmed performers include Adele, Coldplay, Bruno Mars, Florence and the Machine, Ed Sheeran and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.
