Following Andy Abraham’s defeat in last Saturday’s Eurovision Song Contest, Sir Terry Wogan has cast doubts over his involvement in next year’s competition. The veteran TV and radio presenter has commentated on the competition since the 1970s, but following this year’s broadcast said “frankly I don’t want to be presiding over yet another debacle”.

The UK’s entry, former X factor finalist Andy Abraham, finished in joint last place with Germany and Poland scoring just 14 points, while winners Russia notched up a score of 272. Abraham only received points from two countries; six from San Marino, who were taking part for the first time, and eight from Ireland.



In a BBC news interview following the event Wogan stated “at the very beginning of the year I said that Russia would win this for political reasons, and they did”. Later, he went on to say, “The music industry has got to find some way to avoid this continuing debacle or the UK is going to come last every year. This year we had a very good song, a very good singer, but we end up joint last. Dreadful songs score twice what we score. We’ve got to do something about it.”
