New Pioneer DJ Stand-Alone XDJ-RX rekordbox™ Controller
Pioneer DJ will release its XDJ-RX rekordbox controller next month (February 2015), offering DJs an all-in-one, stand-alone solution that combines two USB-driven, CDJ-style platters with a two-channel mixer and central full-colour screen. The controller also inherits aspects of the company’s successful NXS series, as well as a brand new ‘loop slice’ feature.

The controller is Pioneer DJ’s first to feature a single LCD screen that displays information from both players simultaneously, clearly presenting dual waveform, playback position, BPM and beat grids. The inclusion of features previously found in the NXS series – such as Beat Sync, Slip Mode and Quantized cues and loops – and the CDJ-style platters, meanwhile, offer mobile DJs more of a club feel. Users also have access to a two-channel mixer that features Pioneer’s in-built Beat FX (including delay, echo, reverb, flanger and pitch) and Color FX (noise, gate, crush and filter), so DJs can avoid relying on software effects.

With rekordbox software built in and the ability for the unit to operate standalone, the XDJ-RX gives mobile DJs the option to leave behind their laptops or CDs in favour of direct USB playback. Tracks prepared in rekordbox (or the rekordbox app for iPhone, iPod touch or Android smartphone) can be played via the user’s rekordbox USB or loaded directly from an iOS or Android device. Standard flash memory and Mac/Windows computers can also still be connected.

The unit’s twin USB soundcards also mean that users can record their set (in WAV format) direct to USB – great for mobile DJs who want to listen back to their sets in order to work on their performance or choice of track selection.

Two USB–A connections and one USB-B connection mean that multiple storage devices can be hooked up to the XDJ-RX simultaneously. This freedom of connectivity gives DJs the option of leaving behind their laptop or CDs in favour of direct USB playback, offering increased portability and convenience, and allowing them to keep expensive devices safe. Meanwhile, for laptop users it provides a reliable backup: should their computer fail in the middle of a set they can play tracks directly from USB instead.

Users aren’t limited to USB, however. The XDJ-RX is equipped with phono and line level inputs on each channel, XLR and RCA master outs, ¼-inch jack booth outs and two mic inputs, making it a versatile solution for mobile DJs that can act as a stand-alone mixer/playback device or be connected to a laptop, tablet or smartphone. Great for taking on the road, the whole unit weighs 8.0kg and can be easily transported and stored.

The XDJ-RX will be available from late February 2015.
