Queen’s Birthday Honours Awards Song Writer Bill Martin
The Queen’s Birthday Honours list has been announced and included are a few music industry notables. Three-time Ivor Novello winner Bill Martin has been awarded an MBE. Most recognised for penning the hit ‘Congratulations’ (1968), sung by Cliff Richard, Martin also co-wrote the European Song contest winner ‘Puppet on a String’ performed by Sandie Shaw in 1967 and the England World Cup Squad’s ‘Back Home’ (1970). All three tracks were created as part of Martin’s fruitful song-writing partnership with Phil Coulter.

In the 1970s, Martin also wrote, produced and published hits by The Bay City Rollers, with whom he had number ones across the world. As well as a successful publishing and radio presenting career, Martin was a director for 12 years on the PRS Board and also served on the Board of the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters. Martin’s MBE was awarded for Services to Music & Charity in Scotland, as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours this weekend.

Other music industry figures to receive honours this weekend included Island Records president Darcus Beese and ROAR Global founder Jonathan Shalit. Victoria Susan Hull Sharp, Founder and chief executive of London Music Masters and Janis Elizabeth Susskind, Managing director Boosey and Hawkes Music Publishers Ltd, were also honoured.
