Chic Plan Record-Breaking Disco Ball
Nile Rogers, the man behind iconic 70s band Chic, plans on living up to the legendary outfit’s disco heritage by incorporating a giant, world record-breaking mirror ball into their headline set at this year’s Bestival event.

After playing before headliner Elton John last year to eager crowds, Rogers, 61 – who has enjoyed a surge of popularity amongst younger music fans following his work with Daft Punk and more recently with Disclosure, Chase & Status and Aviici – has been invited back to top the bill. Vowing to give festival-goers the ultimate disco party, Chic will deliver on their promise by playing a number of their signature disco-funk hits, as well as Rogers-penned songs by Madonna and David Bowie, beneath the wonderfully decadent spectacle of the world’s biggest disco ball.

After being challenged by Rogers, who recently got the all-clear regarding his fight with prostate cancer, Rob Da Bank, the Bestival curator, hopes to create a Guinness World Record-worthy centrepiece for the occasion. Bestival’s effort isn’t so unusual, however; back in 2006, Pro Mobile covered a similar story where Prolight Concepts, the lighting company, teamed up with Imaginative Events, setting a new record by hanging a rotating disco ball consisting of 8100 mirror tiles (and weighing 1.5tons, with a diameter of 5.01m) at a gala dinner. According to the official Guinness Book of World Records site, on the 26th of April 2012 the record was topped by the BSG Luxury Group for Bacardi Russia; who created a mirrored disco ball measuring 9.98m in diameter.

Rob Da Bank and his team will need to top these figures if they’re to break the record, although we’ve no doubt that Chic will bring ‘good times’ to the masses – no matter what the size of their disco ball!

Bestival 2014 will take place on the Isle of Wight from the 4th to the 7th of September. Other acts announced as part of the festival’s eclectic line-up include Outkast, Busta Rhymes, Basement Jaxx, Beck, and disco pioneer/Studio 54 legend DJ Nicky Siano.
