‘Blurred Lines’ Confirmed as the UK’s Most Downloaded Song
One of the biggest floor-fillers of recent years, ‘Blurred Lines’ by Robin Thicke (feat. TI and Pharell), has been revealed by The Official Charts Company as the most downloaded track of all time. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the UK chart including downloads and the Official Charts Company has published the All-time Official Download Chart Top 100 as part of the UK music industry’s Decade Of Digital celebrations.
Despite accusations that the track glorifies sexual harassment - and a legal battle with the family of Marvin Gaye who claim that ‘Blurred Lines’ borrows from Gaye’s ‘Got to Give It Up’ - the track has sold an incredible 1.54 million copies. After its release last May, it went straight to the top of the Official Singles Chart and went on to achieve 1 million sales in just eight weeks. It spent a total of five weeks at Number 1 - in two separate stints - and became the biggest track of the year on mobile DJ’s dance-floors.
The second place position in the All-time Official Download Chart is occupied by Adele with ‘Someone Like You’, followed by Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera with ‘Moves Like Jagger’ at Number 3. Positioned in fourth place is Gotye (feat. Kimbra) with ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’. Other artists featuring in the chart include Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Jessie J, Kings of Leon, Beyonce, Avicii and Justin Timberlake, among many others. A common trait shared by many of the one-hundred most downloaded tracks is a happy and playful sound with catchy lyrics.
The chief executive of the Official Charts Company said “Blurred Lines is surely one of the catchiest pop hits of all time, so its success is no great surprise. But to become one of only two tracks to have been downloaded 1.5m times – and climb to the top of the poll as the biggest download of all time - is an incredible achievement.”
The Official Download Chart started back in 2004, when Westlife’s ‘Flying without Wings’ was the biggest selling track of the year. X Factor star Leona Lewis’s ‘Bleeding Love’ became the first download to sell over 500,000 copies in 2008, and just two years later ‘I Gotta Feeling’ by the Black Eyed Peas became the first download to top one million. In total, over the course of ten years, more than 1.17 billion singles and 153 million albums have been downloaded in the UK, according to the Official Charts Company.
