Nation Choose Favourite Anthem
Research conducted on behalf of cruise company Royal Caribbean International has narrowed down which anthems make the UK feel happiest as a nation.

Music industry expert, author and DJ Stuart Maconie selected five anthems and asked the nation to vote which one makes them feel the happiest. The winner was U2’s ‘Beautiful Day’ with 36% of the vote, the runner-up was ‘Hey Jude’ from The Beatles, while in 3rd place was Hubert Parry’s ‘Jerusalem’ with 22%. Stuart commented on the outcome, “Making people happy, energised, inspired or passionate is a phenomenal attribute of music in general, and one that a great anthem can universally deliver. We often overlook the power of music to enhance our everyday lives, to soundtrack it, to celebrate it. The ability of a piece of music to capture the feeling of a positive moment, and then being able to recreate the emotional experience each time it is heard is very special. No wonder music is so important in so many people's lives."

The results also show that a huge 95% of people claim their favourite songs have the power to evoke happy memories, with 93% of them adding that they are inspired by the song. Broadcaster Lauren Laverne said “I think an anthem should be uplifting, as well as something we can sing along to and the choices reflect that brilliantly. We all have a song that captured our hearts and stays with us, so it's great to see a mix of the old and new, with classic Beatles up there alongside Robbie.”

The research coincides with the announcement of the new ship ‘Anthem Of The Seas’ which will be the most entertainment-oriented and technologically advanced cruise ship ever to be based in the UK when it launches in spring 2015. Adam Goldstein, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, explains: "Brits have shaped the music world and really know their music, and our new ship, Anthem of the Seas, has music at its heart. Basing a new ship in Southampton shows our commitment to the UK and is also a bold statement of our confidence to continue to be leaders of innovation in music and entertainment. We look forward to bringing Anthem of the Seas to the UK to deliver amazing memories and experiences."
