Regional Winners Announced For The Wedding Industry Awards 2017
At a series of presentation evenings taking place across the country over the last few weeks, the regional winners of the 2017 Wedding Industry Awards have been announced. Covering 26 categories, including Wedding DJ of the Year, the awards aim to recognize and reward excellence in the wedding industry.

Judging for the awards is carried out in two rounds, using a system that has been designed to ensure a level playing field and worthy winners. Firstly, each entrant’s previous wedding customers are invited to evaluate their performance, scoring them across a number of different criteria. The aggregates of these scores are then used to put together a short-list for the judging panel.

The second stage involves a panel of judges – relevant to each category – selecting a winner. For the DJ category, this year’s judges were Pro Mobile’s Editor, Eddie Short, together with previous winners Terry Lewis and Mark van den Berg. The judges choose the winner based on written feedback supplied by each entrant’s past wedding clients as well as a detailed application form and photographs and videos taken from their past weddings.

Winner of the North West Wedding DJ of the Year award, Andy Murphy, told us that it is the way that these awards are judged that make him particularly proud to be a winner. “It’s such an honour and real career high. The wedding industry awards recognise and reward excellence within the wedding industry and that never sounded so good. The unique way that people vote and the awards are judged really make these awards a kitemark for the industry. My business and bespoke service will continue to grow thanks to the awards, and I can’t thank my couples enough. Each couple would have spent a fair amount of time going through the voting process and for that I’m truly thankful. These awards are a credit to this amazing industry.”

As well as the kudos associated with the award, many of the winners also find participating to be a great opportunity to network with other wedding suppliers as East Midlands winner Jason Gamble, of D-Jay’s Mobile Disco, explains, “Winning an award like this is both recognition and appreciation of all the hard work that is put into giving our brides and grooms the service they deserve. I have also found it a useful gateway into networking with some of the industry's finest suppliers and venues, which can only enhance my business."

For others, winning the award serves as recognition and encouragement that all their hard work has paid off. London & South East winner Gary Evans-Osgood told us, “It was a very surreal moment - I heard my name announced and time stood still, and I think I actually froze for a second and waited for them to say ‘sorry we have made a mistake the real winner is…’ But they didn't and it felt like I had saved a penalty with the last kick of the game in the FA Cup Final! Reflecting back a few days later I'm still in shock as there were so many great DJs and colleagues in the room who, in my mind, deserved it more than me. I think the work and training I have put into my little business over the last five years has made my weddings that much better, and that was probably reflected by my couples who kindly voted for me. Probably the proudest moment of my DJ career!”

For South West winner Andy Collins, who won for a second consecutive year, the award was particularly welcome as it came at the end of a hard year during which he suffered a serious injury: a fractured spine. “This was a very difficult time, and I was lucky to come through it, I’m not yet pain free, but am walking! To win the 2017 wedding industry award meant so much to me. Despite everything else this year, winning the award showed me how much my clients value me and what I strive to do to make sure that their day is simply perfect. To hear my name being called was a feeling of many emotions all at once. The competition was extremely high and well done to all the finalists whom are all amazing. I know most of them very well, and must say thank you to them for being so gracious. Whilst on the road to recovery, this award will certainly help me on my journey – continuing to provide the very best I can to my clients going forward.”
