ARTICLE
I am constantly researching music trends and expanding my own music knowledge that is then used either for my music production work with Mastermix, or on live events as part of my DJ sets. I’ve purposefully focused the recent music styles around more ambient styles like Balearic beats and lounge and bar grooves that offer a cool, chilled vibe, as well as nu disco and deep house that take the BPM levels up a notch while maintaining a more laidback feel. These music styles allow us DJs to create the desired atmosphere without trying to fill a dancefloor – until now, that is!

Recent changes to the regulations mean that DJs are now digging out those floor-filling hits and raising the tempo on the dancefloor, making this the perfect time to add some huge anthems to your sets. Whilst researching some dance anthems for a project I was working on, I came across a style of music called ‘big room’ which has since gone on to be known as ‘mainstage’. This style of music became popular throughout the 2010s when music festivals like Tomorrowland would attract huge audiences, often as large as 400,000 people. Catering for these huge crowd sizes required a louder sound and for the music to have a bigger feel than many mainstream dance tracks had at the time.

Artists like Blasterjaxx, R3hab and Martin Garrix started producing and pioneering the big room sound, which is typified by long build ups, beat drops and minimalist melodies. Tracks including ‘Animals’ by Martin Garrix, ‘Toulouse’ by Nicky Romero and ‘Levels’ by Avicci epitomized the style and became global hits. Other artists quickly jumped on board including Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso, all of whom were part of the group Swedish House Mafia as well as enjoying global success in their own rights.

Big room continued to grow in popularity with artists including David Guetta, Timmy Trumpet, Alesso and Afrojack all releasing tracks that became huge DJ anthems. And the trend continues to this day. The style may now be known as mainstage but it remains faithful to the original big room sound with new and exciting artists coming on board producing some massive dance tracks that I am really enjoying playing, both in a studio and as part of a live DJ event.

Mastermix has created its mainstage package, which includes two crates each featuring 20 individual mainstage anthems plus a stunning 60-minute Sessions mix to add to your music library. By carefully selecting the right mainstage tracks for your audiences and mixing them up with other dance classics, you can create exciting sets that are full of energy. Time to get those “hands in the air” and drop some serious tunes!
