Q At long last, events are back. How was your weekend?

A Tiring! I was with Majestic at Ministry of Sound, shooting video for him, and didn’t get out of the club until 7am on Sunday.

Q Hold on. You were working at Ministry of Sound with Majestic?

A Yes [laughs]. It’s an incredible club. We were there about a month ago to record a set for Majestic, it was empty and for the first time in 16 months we turned the sound system on. We stood in the middle and it was a wow moment. And then seeing it full on Saturday night was amazing.

Q And now you’re on tour as support to Majestic.

A Yes, the tour started in Watford and I’ve never been so nervous for a set. I was on at 11pm, by then the club was at capacity – 2540 people. Two days before I had done a 60-person wedding! We were escorted to the stage by security. I thought, wow, this is an epic moment. But as soon as you press play, the nerves disappear. It was amazing. You have around 1000 people singing back at you, they’re going completely nuts and having a great time, so awesome. It’s not all been like that.

Q How often are you playing?

A Each week is different; the tour is quite spread out up until November. Last week it was three times, same again this week. I’ve got a really heavy Saturday coming up: I’m doing some video work for Kiss FM at 51st State Festival, I’m then in Chelmsford with Majestic where he is on from 6 to 7pm, straight after that we are off to Nottingham for the tour gig.

Q Wow. This has really taken off for you then.

A It’s crazy, so hectic. At the end of this week Majestic has a new single out (‘Losing My Mind’) so I’ve been in meetings planning social media. We have all the gigs coming up and I have my own music to make on top of it all.

I still enjoy going out with Dad [mobile DJ Sean Smyth]. We did a wedding on Wednesday night and I’m helping him pack down next week. But now I can pull his leg a bit and tell him that I’ve gone from playing a 2000-capacity club to helping him!

It's fun winding him up, but I still really enjoy helping out.

Q I’d like to talk a bit about your style of play out, rapid transitions, mashups and use of effects, and how this works for events like weddings.

A We’ve really noticed a difference with the most recent parties. People are more into recent music and my style. I still get the odd idiot though. Someone came up recently and wanted to tell me how to DJ, and that no-one cares about my fancy tricks. He told me to stop mixing and to put ABBA on. And that I should just fade down what I was playing, pause and then play the next track.

So, I did exactly what he asked for and the dance floor emptied. I then put on one of my mashups, ‘This Is How We Do It’ going into Usher’s ‘Yeah!’, with a cool little mashup in the middle. The dance floor was full again and this guy just stood there shaking his head. I’m not going to change the way I play for one person, when everyone else is having a good time.

Q So you don’t alter your style for weddings?

A Especially now! Dad tells the brides that I’m on tour with Majestic and playing all these big events, it’s putting a lot of pressure on me! He says things like, “Did you know that he works for Kiss FM? And Ministry of Sound?”
