2019, the year that a whole new generation discovered The Beatles because of a film in which the whole world simply didn’t know them! A strange paradox for certain. Could you imagine a world without The Beatles? I’m not sure I can! Their impact on modern music cannot be underestimated, they simply were the forefathers of pop music as we know it today.

How about beyond the band? They all enjoyed success in one form or another as solo artists, even Ringo! They also played in other bands. George Harrison enjoyed success as part of the Traveling Wilburys, though Paul McCartney is obviously the stand out here. Setting his solo career aside (especially The Frog Chorus!), his success with Wings was phenomenal in the ‘70s. Indeed, the first song I ever played as a radio presenter in the UK was ‘Silly Love Songs’, it was nearly six minutes long and allowed me a moment to think about my next link so that I could sound like I knew what I was doing! He also supported his wife publicly with her quest to bring vegetarianism into the mainstream, another great success. Could you imagine the Young Ones without Neil stating "Vegetable rights and peace man!"?

So that leaves John Lennon, the ‘cheeky chappie’ of the group, the artist, the songwriter, the singer, the husband, the father. Since he was gunned down outside his apartment block in December 1980, he has, in many ways, become even more of an enigma. So many questions left unanswered. Would he have recorded more music? Would he have collaborated with other musicians. Would The Beatles have eventually got back together? Who knows? None of us ever will. All we have is a brief snapshot of the life that he did lead post-Beatles.

I believe that, in terms of using the media to his advantage, John Lennon was light years ahead of anyone. Behind the cheeky one liners, there was a fertile mind and a complete realisation of the power that he possessed through his fame. This often brought troubles to his door. In 1966 this was the case when in an interview with the London Standard Lennon stated "Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue about that; I'm right and I'll be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first, rock 'n' roll or Christianity." Despite the controversy that surrounded him following that line, have a look around you today in 2019, 55 years later, how many people go to church every Sunday? Lennon knew.
