Entertainer Vs Entrepreneur
Who gets this question, from people you just met or haven’t seen in a long time? “What do you do for a living?” I often have to pause and think about how to reply. What exactly is it I do for a living? It’s a simple question, but often a complicated answer for me.

I could say “I am a DJ!”, which I am proud of, but I am more than just that. I’m a business owner, I’m an MC, I design events, I am a collaborative creative consultant (that’s my favorite), I’m a speaker, I’m an entertainer, I’m an entrepreneur, I’m an avid student of performance and business. You get the idea, we all wear a lot of hats.

I think all of these aspects of our business can be divided into two categories: Entrepreneur and Entertainer. A lot of people get into the trap of focusing on one part or the other. Personally, I am an entertainer first, entrepreneur second. I got into the DJ business not because I wanted to run a business but because it was a platform for me to perform in front of audiences and share my passion for music and dance. However, although I prefer the entertainer part, the successful members of our industry embrace both the business in the front and party in the back.

People sometimes ask me what is my ‘secret sauce’, the key to my success in the mobile DJ business, and at first it was hard to figure that out because I know I didn’t achieve it on my own. I always had people to support me and help me because they believed in me. I believe in you and I believe you can be the best. So what is my secret sauce? Well, now that I feel I’ve worked it out, I like to share it as four ingredients of my business that create a recipe for success, blending together aspects of entertainment and entrepreneurialism.

The ingredients are:
1. Operations
2. Opportunities
3. Performance
4. Education
