La Bamba
Ritchie Valens
An artist of Mexican heritage growing up in 1950s California, Ritchie Valens was the first Latino artist to successfully cross into the world of mainstream rock – and you’ve voted his universally recognised track ‘La Bamba’ at number six! The song – originally a Mexican folk song – combined Latin elements with a rock and roll beat and rapid guitar riffs, making it a US chart-topper despite its entirely Spanish lyrics – no mean feat in 1958. As a result, Valens became a forefather of the Chicano rock movement, influencing artists such as Los Lobos and Carlos Santana.
